F1 has unveiled the simplified language that will be used to describe the advanced features of its upcoming 2026 regulations. The championship is implementing what is potentially the most significant rules overhaul in its long history starting in 2026, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the required adoption of fully sustainable fuels. The new power units, which retain the hybrid V6 layout, boast a greatly enhanced energy storage, requiring major innovations in the aero packages. Over a race distance, pilots will strategically manage battery power – including during flying laps – to achieve the best lap time. Broad surveys were undertaken with a wide range of fans, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to determine which terms would aid comprehension of the key features of the upcoming rules. The primary aim was to render a range of advanced technical aspects of the racing as accessible as possible for the global fanbase. Consequently, older technical labels for certain devices – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the moveable wings – have been phased out in preference for straightforward terms that clearly indicate the primary purpose of the innovation. What's the New Technology? According to rule-makers that competitors will have increased agency to choose strategies regarding power usage, harvesting, and conservation. The upcoming changes feature a range of settings that will be clearly indicated on broadcast screens to improve the fans' insight of the strategic duel. Attack Mode: This takes over from the current DRS. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy accessible when a car is close behind the leading car to assist with an overtaking maneuver. Car Design Evolution The 2026 cars will be smaller and lighter relative to current models, with a wheelbase shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight decreased by 30kg. Cumulative downforce is projected to decrease by approximately a significant margin, although constructors will undoubtedly recover some as they develop their cars. Drag has been slashed by 40%. The cars will employ active aerodynamics – front and rear wings will open on the straight sections to improve speed and boost top speed and revert into place for maximum cornering performance. Pirelli tyres will keep the current rim size, but the actual tyres will be reduced in width, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30 millimetres on the rear axle.
