The vehicles for the 2026 season are designed to be smaller, nimbler and more environmentally friendly than this year.

F1 has unveiled the simplified language that will be used to describe the advanced features of its upcoming 2026 regulations.

The championship is implementing what is potentially the most significant rules overhaul in its long history starting in 2026, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the required adoption of fully sustainable fuels.

The new power units, which retain the hybrid V6 layout, boast a greatly enhanced energy storage, requiring major innovations in the aero packages.

Over a race distance, pilots will strategically manage battery power – including during flying laps – to achieve the best lap time.

Broad surveys were undertaken with a wide range of fans, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to determine which terms would aid comprehension of the key features of the upcoming rules.

The primary aim was to render a range of advanced technical aspects of the racing as accessible as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, older technical labels for certain devices – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the moveable wings – have been phased out in preference for straightforward terms that clearly indicate the primary purpose of the innovation.

What's the New Technology?

According to rule-makers that competitors will have increased agency to choose strategies regarding power usage, harvesting, and conservation.

The upcoming changes feature a range of settings that will be clearly indicated on broadcast screens to improve the fans' insight of the strategic duel.

  • Attack Mode: This takes over from the current DRS. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy accessible when a car is close behind the leading car to assist with an overtaking maneuver.
  • Boost Mode: This is a manual energy deployment from the energy recovery system that can be utilized during offensive or defensive moves. It grants the driver peak output at the push of a button.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be deployed strategically, as the overall battery capacity is restricted.

  • Active Aerodynamics: Both the front and rear wings change configuration – flattening on the long straight sections for minimal air resistance and higher speed, and angling down in the bends for maximum downforce.
  • Energy Harvesting: The system can recharge the energy store with power recovered from braking, or during coasting at the conclusion of a straight or in sections where only limited engine output is required.

Car Design Evolution

The 2026 cars will be smaller and lighter relative to current models, with a wheelbase shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight decreased by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is projected to decrease by approximately a significant margin, although constructors will undoubtedly recover some as they develop their cars.

Drag has been slashed by 40%. The cars will employ active aerodynamics – front and rear wings will open on the straight sections to improve speed and boost top speed and revert into place for maximum cornering performance.

Pirelli tyres will keep the current rim size, but the actual tyres will be reduced in width, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30 millimetres on the rear axle.

Power Unit Revolution

The revised hybrid units will have an approximate 50-50 split in horsepower generated by the internal combustion engine and the electrical system, increasing from about 20% electrical this year.

The ERS setup is simplified through the deletion of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the complicated and costly device that recovered energy from the turbo.

Every car on the grid will be mandated to operate on fully sustainable fuel, produced using biomass or lab-created processes.
