American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and calling in sick, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the government shutdown, the transport chief has announced.

"The controllers are wearing thin," the official told Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

Following the government shut down on October 1st, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been missing, causing airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks due to climate and other issues.

More than 3,000 American flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary stated he expects the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I observe the pressure," Duffy remarked in an discussion on a weekend program, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their worries directly.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I drive Uber, can I find an alternative of earnings to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy further mentioned that on Saturday 22 alerts at airports indicated flights would be delayed due to a shortage of employees - among the peak since the closure began.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second-longest halt in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the number of planes in the sky if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his interview, he would not answer straightforwardly when asked if it was secure to travel by air in the United States, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I require my staff focused on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at home," the official stated.

On that day, some planes were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, leading to interruption at the fifth most active terminal in the nation and among the most crowded in the world, as well as additional travel stretching north to the metropolis of Oakland.

The FAA alert was issued at 08:45 in the morning on the weekend. Numerous trips were back on schedule before noon.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were delayed an average of 82 minutes due to staffing shortages, and the FAA said DFW, the second-busiest airport in the country, could encounter problems from reduced staff later in the day.

The FAA warned travelers in the state to check with airlines about revised departure times.

The issue comes ahead of the third match of the World Series, which is due to be played in Los Angeles on Monday night, and approximately four weeks prior to the Thanksgiving break, one of the busiest times to fly in the US.

Strain on American aviation helped end a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the shutdown had reached its fifth week and affected airline operations, including pilot training.

It led a number of air traffic controllers to stay home on the same day on 25 January 2019, temporarily stopping movement at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

On that date, the former president, who at the period was in his first term as president, agreed to sign a short-term spending bill, bringing an end to the government shutdown after thirty-five days.
