Cameroonian Political Opposition Figure Faces Legal Proceedings Concerning Electoral Turmoil, Government Declares

Political Demonstration in Cameroon
Many in Cameroon express anger that Paul Biya has secured an eighth presidential term

The nation's Minister of the Interior the interior minister has announced that opposition leader Tchiroma Bakary will face legal action over claims that he instigated "aggressive post-election demonstrations".

No fewer than 4 demonstrators have been fatally wounded during clashes between law enforcement and opposition supporters since Cameroon's election on October 12, with President Paul Biya, aged 92 securing an eighth presidential mandate.

Issa Tchiroma insists that he was the true winner, a statement rejected by the incumbent party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Violent crackdowns by law enforcement on demonstrators have concerned the global community, with the United Nations, AU and European Union demanding moderation.

Minister's Allegations

Recently, Nji charged the opposition figure of organising what he described as "illegal" rallies resulting in the fatalities, and also rebuked him for declaring victory in the presidential race.

He further stated that Tchiroma Bakary's "accomplices responsible for an insurrectionary plan" will also face legal action.

Election Results

Cameroon's leader, who assumed office in the early 80s and is now the oldest serving president, secured the 12 October vote with a majority of the votes, compared to 35.2% for Tchiroma Bakary, according to the constitutional court.

Challenger's Position

The opposition figure is yet to respond to the authorities' move to prosecute him, but he had earlier declared that he would not accept a stolen vote - and that he was fearless of being taken into custody.

When results were announced, he said that security forces used lethal force on protesters assembled near his house in the city of Garoua, fatally wounding at least 2 civilians.

Probe Launched

Recently, the interior minister disclosed that an inquiry would be started into unrest prior to and following the announcement of the vote outcome.

"In the course of these incidents, some of the perpetrators died," he commented, without giving a exact count of protesters who have been lost their lives in the confrontations.

The minister added that several officers of the police and military also received serious injuries.

Current Situation

Even though the interior minister maintained the situation throughout Cameroon was now manageable, protesters are still demonstrating in various areas of the nation, especially in these two cities, where protesters mounted roadblocks on that day, and burnt tyres on the roads.

Experts caution that the post-electoral violence could lead the country into a political crisis.
