Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced what is being described as the largest reforms to tackle illegal migration "in modern times".

This package, patterned after the stricter approach implemented by the Danish administration, makes asylum approval provisional, narrows the legal challenge options and includes visa bans on states that refuse repatriation.

Refugee Status to Become Temporary

People granted asylum in the UK will only be allowed to stay in the country temporarily, with their case evaluated at two-and-a-half-year intervals.

This implies people could be sent back to their country of origin if it is judged "secure".

The scheme follows the policy in Denmark, where refugees get temporary residence documents and must request extensions when they expire.

The government says it has begun helping people to repatriate to Syria by choice, following the toppling of the Syrian government.

It will now start exploring mandatory repatriation to the region and other nations where people have not routinely been removed to in recent times.

Protected individuals will also need to be settled in the UK for two decades before they can seek indefinite leave to remain - increased from the current 60 months.

Additionally, the authorities will introduce a new "employment and education" visa route, and encourage protected persons to obtain work or start studying in order to switch onto this pathway and qualify for residency faster.

Only those on this employment and education route will be able to sponsor family members to join them in the UK.

ECHR Reforms

Ceasing Welfare Provisions

The home secretary will terminate the legal duty to provide asylum seekers with assistance, terminating guaranteed housing and weekly pay.

Aid would still be available for "those who are destitute" but will be withheld from those with work authorization who fail to, and from people who break the law or refuse return instructions.

Those who "purposefully render themselves penniless" will also be refused assistance.

According to proposals, refugee applicants with resources will be obligated to help pay for the cost of their lodging.
