Southgate suggested his plan to focus his energy toward engaging young people and addressing what he called a dominant downbeat story now found in the country. Embracing New Avenues Away from Coaching In a recent radio interview, the manager was asked about talk linking him with available jobs in the top flight and other leagues. “I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he answered. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.” Dedication to Mentorship Ahead of the publication of his new title, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, he shared that he is “very passionate” about setting examples for young people, drawing on insights from his tenure as head coach of the national side between 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father. Southgate feels that his journey leading the national team, during which the team evolved from being widely disliked to greatly admired, holds wider relevance. “We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he explained. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.” Parenting and Influencing Youth Reflecting on his role as a parent, Southgate remarked: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.” He added: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.” Unity Over Discord The former manager asserted that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the public discourse often highlights conflict. “One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he said. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.” His upcoming publication, the book Dear England, is expected to offer further insights on leadership and national identity drawn from his notable professional journey.
