Vince Gilligan Shares He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... For Now.

The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

As the debut season of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the creative team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.

Regarding the Tremendous Viewer Reception

It would be easy to get swayed by the constant speculation and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. He is striving to avoid both.

“The experience is akin to force fed something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”

Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by audience chatter.”

“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.

The Big Question: Will the showrunner See the Ending of Pluribus?

Considering Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by public opinion, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… with some caveats.

“We've developed some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” he states. “but we are always ready to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Then again, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.

“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”

Of course, why not reference the legendary finales?

“I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV+.
