What We Know Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 lives perished and over 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.

The victims are yet to be formally identified, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the events before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
